Warrior of the Week: Cassandra Wright

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a born and bred Bellingham gal!  An evolving business owner for the last 25 years.  I have been lucky to have had the opportunity to grow up, play and make a living in this great place!

How long have you been practicing at Flux Power Yoga? How did you know this was your place?

I have been practicing at Flux since June 2017. I had purchased a 3-day intro class to start. I knew it was my place immediately – welcoming, fun, not overly serious and fussy yet it was still focused.  I got home from my first class and my husband asked “what the hell did you just do?” I was wiped out and my butt was kicked. I love the music and the weekly focus topics, instructors and the Flux tribe-the whole enchilada.

How has your practiced evolved and /or what benefits have you gotten in your practice and in your life?

Honestly, I could go on forever about how Flux Yoga has impacted my life both mentally and physically.   I (like other Flux Warriors) have gone in and out of my yoga phases throughout my life but I have stuck it out here!  I landed here in a “lost stage” in my life…I had closed my fish market/processing plant after 20 years and I realized for the first time that I really needed to unravel 20 years of bottled-up grief, sadness (I was a widow too) and workaholic stress.  I was becoming a toxic and unhappy person towards everyone around me – I needed to be pushed in a way that wasn’t related to work, customers or relationships. There really is no way to think about anything once you hit the mat and the heat takes over except your own ability to breathe and hold a pose.  I have been able to learn to “let it go” and focus on myself.

Physically – I couldn’t even get into a backbend or a camel pose or hold my arms up for chair position…my body had been so accustomed to my physical work environment that my upper body was almost frozen.  I am so excited to be able to do a backbend at my age! I can actually pull my shirt off now without pain because my body is actually opening up, getting balanced and healing.

Favorite pose and why?

I really like half-moon – I love that it just feels like a bright, open and happy pose.  Energy radiates in and out.

Any advice for new yogis?

Don’t even worry about what pose you can’t get into or hold…the challenge is the same for everyone in class. The tightness and tension didn’t happen overnight and it just takes practice to unravel it!
